Understanding the Intelligent Mail Barcode
The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMB) is the next generation of technology by the USPS to sort and track letters and flats, and can identify every piece of mail that enters the postal system. The IMB, available in two forms, will be implemented in a phased approach between January and May, though it may be November before all benefits are realized. All mailers will be expected to use the new IMB by May 2011, when the current POSTNET barcode is set to expire.
The IMB’s function is to improve mail deliverability, reduce undeliverable-as-addressed (UAA) mail, and provide opportunities for multichannel marketing offers.
The two versions of the IMB are the Basic and the Full Service. The Basic version contains a unique Mailer ID that identifies the mail owner, a Service Type code that indicates mail class services requested, and a code for the optional endorsement line.
The Full Service version contains the same information as the Basic service. Additionally, a PostalOne! account is required for using this version.
To get started using the IMB, the USPS recommends the following steps:
- Talk to your local Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) or Mailpiece Design Analyst (MDA) for information.
- Apply for a Mailer ID, used to identify your mail pieces.
- Apply for a PostalOne! Account, used to submit electronic documentation.
- Learn about the suite of Intelligent Mail barcodes.
- Determine which OneCode Service you would like to use.
- Access guides and specifications for Intelligent Mail.
- Review presentations about Intelligent Mail.
